Picasa Web Albums beta has been released by Google. You can upload your photos online to a generous 250 MB and keep them privately, only accessible by your Google account. There is also an option to place some of your photos in a public gallery.

For Picasa users, there is a new version with a web albums feature integrated that allows you to select multiple pictures and upload them to an album. Otherwise, you can just upload them by browsing for up to 5 pictures and uploading them. For an additional $25 a year the storage limit can be increased to 6GB, giving you peace of mind on where you are backing up your photos. (June 2006)

Flickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite, and an online community platform. It was one of the earliest Web 2.0 applications. In addition to being a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers as a photo repository. Its popularity has been fueled by its innovative online community tools that allow photos to be tagged and browsed by folksonomic means. It hosts more than two billion images. Yahoo announced that they would shut down Yahoo! Photos on September 20, 2007, after which all photos would be deleted. During the interim, users had the ability to migrate their photos to Flickr. All who migrated to Flickr were given three months of a Flickr Pro account. Flickr is now yahoo owned company.
